Bilingual education as a big game - A playful approach to teaching young children foreign languages

The rapidly increasing demand for teaching/lerning foreign languages from a very early age (kindergarten and elementary school) has made it imperative to find and test appropriate and effective methods of second language teachnig and bilingual education with very young children. These experiences both in Italy and in other countries have suggested the application of a "playful approach" which regards foreign language learning as a sort of "Big Game". This guidebook is intended for foreign language teachers in primary and pre-primary education. Therefore the structure of the guide consists essentially in the presentation of a number of language teaching games aimed at stimulating the child to be the main agent of the learning process. The final Appendix offers a practical exampleof some pilot lessons as a useful paradigm for the teacher's creativity.

RENZO TITONE, Professor Emeritus of Educational Psycholinguistics at the Universities of Rome, Italy, and Toronto, Canada, has been working for over thirty years in the areas of applied psycholinguistics and language padagogy. He has published 110 books and around 500 articles in different languages on the subject. He is the author of a treatise on early bilingual education, translated into French and Spanish: Bilinguismo precoce e educazione bilingue (Rome: Armando, 1972/1993 2nd edition). He is the Editor of the Italian Review of Applied Linguistics in Rome since 1965. He is also an advisor on bilingual education to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg and to the Italian Ministry of Education.
